Catch up and get involved with a drama group with a difference celebrating their first anniversary.Pyjama Drama has helped to put Disability Sheffield’s learning disablity group, Sheffield Voices, on the map nationally as a self-advocacy group that is challenging assumptions and practices in a creative way and is looking for new members from November 2022.

In a Spin-off series following the first year of marriage for the characters from ‘The A Word’ young couple Ralph and Katie face the domestic challenges faced by all newlyweds, but with the added fact that they have Down’s Syndrome. The series has been written by a team of disabled writers. Disability campaigners have welcomed the announcement of the new programme, calling it an “excellent example of disabled representation on and off screen”.

Speakup Rotherham are holding their annual Keeping Healthy event in Sheffield with partners at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield on 12th September from 10am to 2.30pm.They have 100 spaces for adults with learning disabilities and autistic people from across Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley, to try sporting activities and attend workshops. Sheffield Voices was commissioned by the Clinical Commissioning Group to run a series of events in May to find out what people with learning disabilities and autistic people feel about health services in Sheffield. They connected with around 100 people who were able to give their views in this Easy Read report.

From 14th until the end of June the free #EqualTreatment seminars and follow up workshops aim to share the lived experiences of health and social care services and support of B.A.M.E families with children and adults with learning disabilities. They will consider how to challenge and address racism and inequalities locally and regionally as service providers, communities and families and call for action, accountability and a commitment for change.

Members of performing arts organisation Under The Stars will be acting up at the end of this month and the start of next – with two separate shows at the Crucible Theatre.The Sheffield based charity uses the performing arts to enhance the lives of people with learning disabilities and/or autism. ‘Freedonia’ takes place on Tuesday May 31 and ‘The Many Journeys of Maria Rossini’ the following evening, both in the Studio Theatre starting at 7pm.
