    We are very proud to announce that Disability Sheffield has been re-awarded the Advocacy Quality Performance Mark from the National Development Team for Inclusion for a period of three years from February 2022 to January 2025. The award is in recognition of our commitment and ability to provide high quality independent advocacy for people who need support to express their needs and have increased choice and control in their lives.

    Putting Active Disabled People In The Picture

    Disability Rights UK has teamed up with the Centre For Ageing Better to launch ‘Picture Yourself Active’, a new, publicly accessible image library of over 300 photos depicting older and disabled people getting active to challenge pervasive negative stereotypes. The images include some from Disability Sheffield’s Sheffield Cycling 4 All project at Hillsborough Park.

    #BigPowerOff Protests Becoming Bigger

    A protest against rising energy prices spearheaded by a Sheffield-based group has now taken off nationally, with another #BigPowerOff event due to take place this Saturday 16th April at 7pm. Sheffield City Council has launched a ‘guide’ to getting financial help and advice during the current cost of living crisis with suggestions of what to do if you’re struggling to pay your energy bills.

    This year Sheffield Healthwatch are looking for 5 voluntary or community sector groups or organisations to work with them on projects which will help take people’s views and experiences to decision makers in Sheffield. The scheme offers fewer grants than before, but each one has more funding ( £2,000) and a greater level of support from the Sheffield Healthwatch team.

    Poll cards for the local elections on the 5th May have now been posted out to everyone who is registered to vote.If you haven’t received your poll card, this could mean that you haven’t registered to vote and won’t be able to have your say. You will need to register by 14th April to be able to vote.You don’t need to register to vote for every election – only if you have never registered before or have changed your address, name or nationality.

    This year Ramadan started on 2 April for 29 or 30 days and ends with Eid al-Fitr in May.Diabetes UK has produced factsheets about diabetes and Ramadan, which include fasting and managing your diabetes during the holy month. They have been developed in partnership with the Muslim Council of Britain’s Diabetes Advisory Group.

You will be contacted via phone or email to identify you as part this group.     Many disabled people are having harsh challenges trying to get vital adaptations to their home, with long waits and some having to resort to crowdfunding to pay for them, an investigation has revealed. The Bureau Of Invesigative Journalism through its ‘Bureau Local’ team, which works on stories that matter to communities across the UK, has been looking into Disabled Facilities Grants.
