Campaigning organisation Disabled People Against Cuts is launching an investigation into why some doctors are refusing to help their patients by writing letters to support their disability benefits claims. If your doctor has refused to write a letter stating that you need a home visit for a benefit assessment or has refused to issue you with a Fit Note, DPAC would like to hear from you.

The National Institute of Health and Social Care Excellence have published this month two quality standards related to the support of people with learning disabilities or a learning disability and autism. The standard on the care and support of people with learning disabilities growing older is a new Quality Standard.The standard on supporting children, young people and adults where there is behaviour that challenges has been updated from the original 2015 version.

South Yorkshire Police are warning members of the public to watch out for a scam involving the Universal Credit benefit advising “Never share your personal or financial information with someone you don’t know and trust, especially if it’s in response to an offer of “free money” or a “free grant” .

The next Disability Hub meeting will take place next Wednesday, 25 September 2019 from 2.00pm to 4.00pm at The Circle, 33 Rockingham Lane Sheffield S1 4FW.
The Disability Hub meeting is one of the ways in which disabled people can have a greater say on the services and businesses disabled people interact with locally.

Make sure you go to the Winter Gardens this month and have a look at the Healthwatch Sheffield Exhibition “celebrating people who inspired by their own experience, or someone close to them, are using their insights to make things better for others” in Sheffield. Nominations came from organisations such as SAYiT, Manor & Castle Development Trust and Disability Sheffield. The exhibition is open until 25 August.

STOMP stands for stopping over medication of people with a learning disability, autism or both with psychotropic medicines. It is a national project involving many different organisations which are helping to stop the over use of these medicines. STOMP is about helping people to stay well and have a good quality of life.

Healthwatch Sheffield has launched a survey to find out about the experiences of people aged 65 and over who use health and/or care services. The survey involves filling in demographic information (optional) and simply ticking ‘agree’ or ‘disagree’ to 10 statements. The survey is open until Monday 9th September.

The roles of workplace personal assistants (PAs), who support disabled people to do their jobs, needs to be more clearly defined and better supported if accessible workplaces are to flourish, new research by Sheffield Hallam and York Universities has said. Disability Sheffield has been asked to develop training materials based on the study which will be available in autumn 2019.

As well as service user data the review includes stories from people who have used the advocacy service in their own words and outlines some of our important campaigning work carried out through the year. All Hub partners hold the Advocacy Quality and Performance Mark and follow the Advocacy Code of Practice.

The Sheffield branch of campaigning organisation Disabled People Against Cuts has launched a crowdfunding appeal to buy tape recorders and cassettes for people to use during their PIP medical assessments. Not everyone is aware that you are allowed to record the assessment but the equipment must be supplied by the person being assessed and many people on benefits cannot afford to buy recording equipment.
