We’ve been speaking to people with autism, learning disabilities and severe mental health issues about what they need to feel safe, confident and positive in physical activity settings.If you work in a community organisation, leisure centre or run mainstream physical activities we’d love to welcome you to the project at our free event on Wednesday 20th July to share our findings and launch a new network to develop more accessible activities.

Disability Sheffield is recruiting a part time Development Co-ordinator to work with our inclusive cycling project. We are looking for someone to lead on the monitoring and funding elements of the project including administering our trike loan scheme, helping develop SC4A as a sustainable project in the longer term. The findings of a workshop held last November looking at Race, Disability and Self-Directed Support in Sheffield have just been published. Bringing together work from SACMHA, Health Watch Sheffield, Speak Up, Think Local Act Personal and Disability Sheffield, the report highlights the specific experiences and recommendations from each group as well as views and concerns shared by them all.

After extensive work at pace on local taxi policy consultations at Disability Sheffield there is now a national taxi guidance consultation. We know a lot of the issues many disabled people have to book or get the assistance they need whether for taxis or private hire services are not unique to this city. Contributing to this consultation on national guidance by 20 June should help to ensure improvements can be made for us and more widely.

A new method for accessing real time bus information is currently being trialled in the City Centre. It is designed to make bus departure information available to all with audio announcements made on request using a push button. You now have the opportunity to give feedback on the audio and the visual elements of the information system at consultations@disabilitysheffield.org.uk.

Disability Sheffield is a co signatory to a letter of support from Disabled Peoples’ Organisations which will be submitted to the National Assembly of People with Disabilities of Ukraine, the UK Minister for Disabled People, the press and media. We hope that disabled people in Ukraine will hear our support for them in this terrible conflict.

Disability Sheffield is hosting a series of events during the week of 16th-20th May to find out what people’s experiences are of accessing healthcare in Sheffield. if you have a learning disability , autism or you are a carer, do join us. We’ll also send out a survey and offer a phoneline for two weeks so you can call and leave messages for us to tell us what you think.

After our appearance on Look North on 13 April we are keen to respond to Sheffield City Council’s consultation on its draft Private Hire Operator and Vehicle Licence Policy.
