Have you ever thought about taking up yoga to boost your physical and mental wellbeing? Organised by Sheffield Cycling 4 All and funded by Sport England, our free yoga sessions take place every Tuesday evening between 7-8pm and are specifically designed for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions. Qualified Yoga teacher Jane Collins knows lots of ways to adapt traditional yoga practices, so that everyone taking part can experience all the benefits that yoga offers.

Do you want to lead a healthier lifestyle but aren’t sure how to get started and keep up the good work once you have managed to get going? Disability Sheffield is here to help you by offering a new online, peer-led group for disabled people who want to lead a healthier lifestyle. The group is open to all disabled people, including people with learning disabilities and autism and takes place every Friday at 10am for one hour on Zoom. The last session is on Friday 13 November and we hope to offer another course in the New Year.

Disability Sheffield has added our name to a growing list of signatories calling for the rights of disabled people to be restored. A group of over 60 organisations including Disability Rights UK, Inclusion London, Liberty and Mind have signed an open statement asking the government to withdraw the sections of the Coronavirus Act relating to disabled people, as the House of Commons prepares to review the Coronavirus Act on 30 September. You can sign the statement and contact your MP using a template letter.

The National Emergencies Trust has announced £1.5 million of funding to support grassroots Disabled Peoples Organisations (DPOs) across the UK to respond to the Covid-19 needs of disabled people. The funding will be administered and distributed through a partnership of DPOs across the UK. Disability Sheffield is the regional partner for South Yorkshire and the Humber.
Closing date for applications is 5th October 2020.

At Disability Sheffield we appreciate actions speak louder than words. It is not enough for us to say we support the Black Lives Matter movement, instead we must demonstrate our commitment to making sure we are not part of the problem. We have started out on this journey by setting up a focus group to identify any racism in our organisation so this can be correctly addressed.

Sheffield’s new Race Equality Commission is calling for submissions of evidence to support its inquiry into race inequality in Sheffield and looking for volunteers to join its group of commissioners to contribute expertise throughout the inquiry. We are keen that the voices of disabled people experiencing race inequality are heard so please submit your experiences to the Commission by the deadline of 18 September 2020.

The government has produced new guidance and a new range of exemption cards calling for the public and businesses to be mindful of and act sensitively towards people who are exempt from wearing a face covering. This comes at a time when charities are asking the government to listen to and better understand the concerns of disabled people and to do more to promote awareness around who is exempt from the face mask rules following reports of disabled people facing hostility from the public and businesses. If your PA is returning to work in the near future the Sheffield Individual Employer and PA Development Group has produced a new Risk Assessment Tool to support individual employers to minimise any risks for their PAs to return to work. The Risk Assessment Tool is a useful guide to conversations with your PA about risk and gives topics and poses questions. You can record on the document what you and your PA have agreed will happen and review it as national guidance changes.

Sheffield City Region have very kindly given our disability cycling project, Sheffield Cycling 4 All ( SC4A ), 4 electric assist tricycles which are available for anyone who can’t ride a two wheeled bike to loan for up to 3 months (depending on demand). We hope that this scheme will enable people to experience pedal power as a viable mode of disability transport.
