Emily was chosen as one of the ‘Small Charities Coalition Stars for 2021’ out of 130 nominations to showcase some of the UK’s unsung heroes from small charities, sharing their stories and achievements and raising awareness of the essential work of the UK’s small charity sector.

During ‘Volunteers’ Week’( 1 – 7 June ) we are proud to be celebrating the contribution of our volunteers to the work of Disability Sheffield – whether that is with Sheffield Cycling 4 All, Sheffield Voices, delivering PPE, our advocacy and information service, engagement and influence work or as a trustee. Particularly during the past year of the pandemic we would not have been able to support and engage with so many disabled people without them.

Disability Sheffield has sent a letter to the Cabinet Office’s Disability Unit expressing concern that disabled people may find themselves unable to use services and get into events if Vaccine Passports become regarded as essential in the UK.

We are proud that stories from service users and volunteers at Disability Sheffield are among those providing evidence in a new national report highlighting inequalities that certain communities including disabled people face, when accessing parks and natural spaces near to where they live. The report ‘Out of Bounds:Equity in Access to Urban Nature’ is compiled by the National Outdoors For All Working Group.

Congratulations to our very own advocate and Sheffield campaigner, Anne Everson ,who has spoken of her success in ensuring more of the city’s polling stations are accessible to disabled people. Anne started her campaign three years. Due to her efforts and just before the elections took place this week Walkley Library polling station was moved to Ebenezer Methodist Church and the Hallamshire Tiles polling station was moved to Crookesmoor Lifelong Learning Centre.

Disability Rights UK Our Voices, a group of organisations run by and for disabled people, including Disability Sheffield, is calling on the government to delay the Disability Strategy. The group has sent a letter to highlight their serious concerns about both the timetable and the methods used to engage with disabled people and their organisations. The Government have “listened to concerns and extended the deadline for contributions to be woven into the strategy to 28 February “.
