Did you know that three million people in the UK are affected by incontinence? And with many councils across the nation closing public toilets due to cost-cutting there is now much more chance of getting caught short.
So this year’s World Continence Week is campaigning for a reversal of the trend and encouraging people living with incontinence to seek help so they no longer have to suffer in silence.
The annual event is run by the International Continence Society, while The Urology Foundation handles the campaign in the UK.
They say: “For World Continence Week 2022 we are focusing on the need to overcome the unnecessary stigma that surrounds incontinence. With an ageing population and more people with prostate cancer, bladder cancer and Benign prostatic hyperplasia now is not the time to be closing toilets.
The Urology Foundation has produced a list of resources to help the campaign, several downloads on the causes and management of incontinence, and a template letter to send to councillors and MPs about the repercussions of public toilet closures.
They have also issued a ‘Need To Pee card’, designed to help those living with urinary incontinence to gain quick access to a toilet when the urge comes. The card can help explain the circumstance and quickly avoid any embarrassing situation. You are asked to donate £2.50 to the Foundation to obtain one.
