Disability Sheffield have launched an urgent appeal to raise £10,000 before the end of March!
This money will help Disability Sheffield continue to deliver community advocacy work that genuinely changes the lives of thousands of people across Sheffield for the better, now and into the future.
Who We Are
Disability Sheffield is a local charity that has been supporting the disabled community to make their own voices heard since 2003 through co-production; what we call ‘community advocacy.’
As a user-led organisation it is our community, not Disability Sheffield itself, that makes the decisions about which issues we work on to help improve people’s everyday lives across Sheffield. We work by connecting our members directly with decision makers so that they can use their own real-life experiences to help make policies and places far more inclusive for everyone.
Supporting our Community
Over the years we have also taken on other projects benefitting our community which otherwise would have been lost to Sheffield:
· Sheffield Voices: Our community-advocacy group for adults with learning disabilities or autistic adults came to us in 2010. It has since delivered some amazing work, including ongoing large-scale community events like ‘The Big Voice’ and has gained national recognition for its achievements!
· Sheffield Cycling 4 All: the well-known and much-loved inclusive cycling project joined Disability Sheffield in 2014. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength and recently secured a further 4 years of funding from the National Lottery and Motability.
· Sheffield Travel Support: Just last April the Sheffield Travel Support service, which helps over 100 people every day to access activities and support they would otherwise struggle to get to, was taken on by Disability Sheffield to prevent its closure.
Impact of Austerity
Like a lot of charities over the last fifteen years we have suffered a lot from the ongoing impacts from austerity and the recent cost of living crisis. Whilst we still receive partial funding for some areas of our work our core running costs are rarely covered and we have extremely limited ‘unrestricted’ funding; money that we can freely put to wherever it will make the most impact for the community. This money is vital to fill small funding holes to keep projects going and also gives us the flexibility to make the sum of our work much greater than the parts.
