Taking Steps - Or Sitting Down - To Enjoy A Dance

Those irrepressible people at Sheffield Cycling 4 All are determined to keep us healthy even during lockdown with online fitness, yoga and now dance classes. Disability Sheffield volunteer John Quinn, who definitely doesn’t look good on the dancefloor, according to him! , gives it a go.

“I can safely say ( John says ) that staying in rhythm isn’t one of my main talents, so have spent most of my life avoiding anything to do with dancing. But these Dance 4 All sessions are something different.

Led by Angelina Abel, the weekly classes are specially designed for people with a range of disabilities to let loose and get into the groove. You can do this seated or standing up, wear whatever you feel comfortable in (there’s no dress code for this club) and there’s no competition, just a lot of people moving to the best of their abilities.”

Angelina says “It was refreshing to teach a Zoom class with such a cohesive group and witnessing how everyone were chatting and supporting each other towards practising the activity,’‘ said Angelina. “It felt even better to see how all participants were keen to take part, knowing that most of them hadn’t done African dance before. The group wanted to learn about the rich Angolan music culture too and their welcoming approach inspired me to teach and adapt movements with ease. I definitely look forward to continuing this movement journey with this great community.”

And those who took part seem to agree. “Great concept, great energy, good inclusive mix of ages, personalities, barriers & abilities and very responsive teaching,’‘ commented Jen Greenfield. “For me it was specially uplifting to revisit something physical I used to do – African dance in a form that suits the present version of my body with a poorly balanced & restricted lower half. I started the day low mood after a virtual funeral & left the class smiling and ready for action. Thank you for that.”

And another participant, Jenny, added: “It was nice and upbeat. I’m not really a dancer but it was good vibes…so I’m not gonna worry about actually being good at it.”

Dance 4 All takes place every Friday from noon to 1pm. To discover more you should email info@sheffieldcycling4all.org or call Tom on 07922 183338.

You can also find out about the already-established Move And Chat and Yoga 4 All, as well as the NEW Boxercise 4 All sessions the same way.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.
