How to Create an Accessible Tourism Guide

“You don’t have to go abroad to have a great holiday – especially when there are so many disability-friendly places on these isles.”

So say VisitScotland and VisitEngland who have teamed up to encourage venues in the two countries to advertise their accessibility through creating their own access guides via a new website.

Accessibility Guides offers advice for places which want the public to know just how inclusive they are, and it is hoped that it will soon become a major resource for businesses – 63% of which do not currently advertise any adjustments they make for access needs – to attract tourists.

The two bodies cited the Walk Away Pound research by Business Disability Forum in creating the guides – showing that three quarters of disabled people will walk away from inaccessible businesses.

UK Government Minister for Tourism John Glen said: “The UK has an incredible range of world-class attractions and we want them to be open to as many people as possible. These new guides will give clear accessibility information to make it easier for disabled visitors to plan their trips with confidence.”
