Honouring Transgender Lives

Honouring Transgender Lives

November 20th marks the 25th Transgender Day of Remembrance. It honours the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. Research shows that transgender people reported higher rates of disability (30 percent) compared with *cisgender women (24 percent) or *cisgender men (18 percent). *Cisgender people have a gender identity that aligns with the sex that a doctor assigned them at birth.

Despite this, the statistics around trans healthcare and healthcare for trans disabled people are troubling.

For example 60% of disabled respondents reported experiencing ableism when accessing trans-specific healthcare and 14% of people surveyed reported that they were outright refused GP care on account of being trans.

You can read more about these statistics and more in the Trans lives survey.

Sheffield is hosting a Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil in the Winter Gardens on the 20th of November from 5.30 to 7pm.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
