Consumer affairs organisation MoneySavingExpert has launched a new guide called Heat The Human Not The Home, designed to alert people on ways to keep yourself warm without wasting money on energy usage.
The site says: “We’re heading towards the colder months and, with energy costs soaring, bills are likely to be horrendous. MoneySavers have shared their tips to ‘heat the human, not the home’ to cut down on energy use. So we’ve investigated the cheapest ways of keeping yourself warm, from hot water bottles to electric gilets.”
Founder and TV regular Martin Lewis adds: “This is a guide I really wish we needn’t be publishing. The reason I and the team to put this together is due to my overflowing email bag of desperation from people who can’t afford their energy bills. This guide’s all about how to keep warm if you’re at the point of cutting back on heating but before you do, Martin adds, there are a few important things to consider:
- It may be dangerous for older people, or those with asthma and other health conditions. If in doubt, consult your GP and follow their advice. Age UK for example says it’s important older people do all they can to stay as warm as possible.
- Will it impact your mental health? Some say a cold home affects their mental health and motivation.
- Rent your home? Check what your contract says about heating. Some landlords stipulate you must turn the heating on regularly, or keep the home at a minimum temperature.
There is also a forum, where you can discuss the advice and offer any of your own.
