Global Disability Summit held in London

The UK Government hosted its first ever Global Disabilty Summit, on 24 July with more than 700 people taking part.

The sunmmit took place at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London and brought together delegates from governments, donors, private sector organisations, charities and disabled people’s organisations (DPOs) . It was organised with the International Disability Alliance and the government of Kenya.

Those involved were asked to sign a Charter For Change, intended to improve diabled people’s rights worldwide.

At the same time a ‘rival’ summit was held in the city by Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC), which opposes the British Government’s disability policies. This featured representatives of national disabled people’s organisations in Bolivia, Greece, Malaysia and Uganda who described to UK activists how they have fought oppression and discrimination in their own countries. Further details are available here.

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
