Getting a Diagnosis for Autism in Sheffield

Getting a Diagnosis for Autism in Sheffield

It’s quite common for people to have gone through life without an autism diagnosis, feeling that somehow they don’t quite fit in. Many people learn to cope with life in their own ways, although this can be hard work. Some people are happy to remain undiagnosed, some find it difficult to get a diagnosis, especially women.

Healthwatch Sheffield has designed a new leaflet for adults to understand the steps you would need to take to get a formal diagnosis of Autism. It outlines the process of seeking an Autism diagnosis through the NHS and whether a diagnosis is right for you explaining:

“If you think you may be autistic, you might want to get a diagnosis. There are many online ‘autism tests’ available, but none of these can guarantee accuracy. This guide explains the benefits of getting a diagnosis and how to get a referral from your GP. Our diagnostic assessment guide explains what the autism assessment will be like.”

The National Autistic Society has some further general guidance, including describing the benefits of having a diagnosis here.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
