Disability Becomes Unionised!

Disability Becomes Unionised!

What is claimed to be the first union set up in the United Kingdom ‘by and for disabled people’ has launched a recruitment campaign.

The Disability Union was set up at the end of last year by George Baker and Joel Jordan, who both have experience of being disabled in different ways and share an urge to increase inclusion by getting people to work together and support each other.

They have teamed up with different organisations including Sheffield-based Fry Law, which can provide guidance on any legal rights-based problems. The union also has a team of caseworkers, all of whom have personal disability experience and can offer help on topics ranging from benefits to loneliness. It also sends out a weekly newsletter and there is a Twitter site featuring a video about the launch and giving reasons why you should join.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
