British Sign Language (BSL) week celebrated this month what the British Deaf Association calls the nation’s ‘fourth indigenous language’. The Sign Language Week website raises awareness of the United Kingdom’s Deaf community and provides a platform for Deaf people to proudly promote their language and culture. You can also learn some BSL on the site.
Locally, to highlight BSL week the Deaf Advice Service at Citizens Advice Sheffield, based at The Circle, Rockingham Lane, have circulated the BSL fingerspelling alphabet with an overview of their work and Five Common Myths about deafness and hearing loss. All of the Deaf Advice team are fluent British Sign Language users and provide advice to Deaf people on a full range of issues including debt, housing, employment, discrimination and access to health care.
