The Coronavirus crisis has caused hardship for many families already struggling for food. Seeing this problem St Mary’s Church and Community Centre has started the Bread for Sheffield scheme.
Bread for Sheffield is a fundraising initiative, allowing St Mary’s to respond to this need by providing nutritious food boxes to families all over Sheffield.
There’s been a a shortage of flour during the outbreak .This scheme allows people to buy 2.5kg of flour ( and yeast ) from a range of top quality flour from Huskins at cost price so you can get baking again. Whilst buying the flour, customers are asked to make a donation on top of the cost of the flour, 50% of which will go to the St Mary’s food delivery scheme, and 50% will go to support local food banks.
St Mary’s explain that “the Covid crisis is a complete disaster for families who were already on the breadline. They have lost their jobs, their kids are at home without school meals and limited public transport means they can’t get to the supermarkets.”
“Families who were getting by are suddenly in need of food to help them get through this crisis. Demand at Foodbanks has increased by 300% since the lockdown started.”
Making a donation in addition to buying flour from the Bread for Sheffield scheme helps to fund emergency food boxes which are delivered to over 260 households every week.
