Big Power Off Protest Over Energy Price Rises

Big Power Off Protest Over Energy Price Rises

With many disabled people bearing the brunt of rising energy prices, a series of protests have been organised by activist organisations.

DPAC Sheffield, part of the national campaigning group Disabled People Against Cuts are spearheading the Big Power Off Protest due to take place on Friday April 1st and which people can take part in from their own homes. They say it is the first of many rolling protests, giving those affected the chance to make their voice heard.

They are calling for people to use as little non-essential as possible power on that day, perhaps by turning your heating down or off, only eating cold food or not taking a bath or shower. And for those who due to disability or for other reasons are unable to do this there are other ways they can get involved – perhaps by posting details of how the bill rises will affect them, or selfies in solidarity under the BigPowerOff hashtag.

“This campaign will hit the energy firms where it hurts the most. Their profits,’‘ says DPAC Sheffield’s Jen Jones. “Together we can – and will – take the power back.”

You can find out how to take part by watching this video. There are also further details on the main DPAC page.

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
