Are you in your late teens and interested in film making? Well you could be on course for success by applying to take part in a learning programme based at the Showroom in Sheffield. The British Film Institute runs an Academy there, which is an opportunity for young people aged 16-19 years old who are not at university, particularly underrepresented groups in the film industry, such as women, BAMER people, disabled people and applicants from low-income families.
Over the ten-week programme, taking place on Saturdays from 9th November to 3rd February, masterclasses in acting, directing, screenwriting, producing, camera, editing, sound and cinematography will take place. It is an ideal course for young people who have an interest in a career in acting, scriptwriting or filmmaking but don’t have the resources or contacts to make it a reality.
The 20 successful applicants will also gain a Level 2 NCFE qualification called ‘Preparing to Work In The Film Industry’ over the duration of the course, and make valuable industry contacts.
“Alumni of the course have found it to be a really rewarding opportunity in terms of developing new skills and a great insight into how the film industry works. There is a course fee of £25 for the ten-week programme, but bursaries are available to cover the cost of the course and travel expenses so that no one is turned away due to lack of funds,” says course co-ordinator Nora Murphy.
Applications are open now and you can apply here or contact Nora directly at BFI.Academy@srws.org.uk
Applications close on Monday 16 October.
