The Care Quality Commission’s inspection report of Birdsgrove Nursing Home makes for uncomfortable reading and is a recent example of how England’s social care system is failing the most vulnerable in our society. With more than £4bn slashed from funding and care workers being forced to cut corners to deal with a growing ageing population, an article in the Observer Sunday magazine asks whether we should be surprised that allegations of abuse and neglect have now hit record levels.
