The Merlin is proud to present the opening of ‘Fading into Nothingness ‘ on January 17th, 18th and 19th written by Theo Griffiths, a former student of Freeman College. ‘Fading into Nothingness’ is a short play about a Sheffield family torn apart by grief and how they cope with their teenage son, Zack (played by Theo) who is autistic and already struggling in mainstream school.

With effect from Monday 2nd December, personal wheelchair budgets are being introduced as part of a range of measures to improve current wheelchair service provision, to ensure people have better experiences of care and to give people greater choice over the wheelchair provided. People who need Section 117 after care support now have the right to a personal health budget, providing them with greater choice and control when managing their own health and care.

The British Parliament’s Joint Committee On Human Rights findings condemn the “horrific reality” of conditions and treatment under which many young people with learning disabilities and autism are detained in mental health hospitals, “inflicting terrible suffering on those detained and causing anguish to their distraught families”.

On the last Sunday of every month from 10am to 2pm Crystal Peaks offer a range of measures to make the shopping experience more inviting to people who prefer a quieter environment.Stores will turn off their music, or turn it down to a low level. Hand driers will be switched off as well as children’s rides. Vending machines will also not make a sound. Sensory Sundays may be of particular interest to people with autism.

Hannah Makepeace, aged 26, and studying for an MA in broadcast journalism, produced a TV news-style clip about Osian Williams from the Peak District, which was declared the winner in this year’s Mencap Journalism Awards

This year the Department of health and Social Care, working with the Department for Education, will review the ‘Think Autism’ strategy and extend it to cover children as well as adults. They are asking for the views of people with autism, their families and carers to find out where improvements can be made. The consultation closes on 16 May.
