Sheffield Voices, our learning disability and autism group, is offering a space where people can connect with each other, have some fun and find out information. Sheffield Voices Coffee Mornings take place every Tuesday and Thursday at 11am until 12pm, that’s for one hour on “ZOOM”, which is an online meeting space.

The National Development Team for Inclusion is working on research around housing services (supported living and residential care) for people with learning disabilities. Family carers have told NDTi about the varied ways they support a relative with a learning disability in different housing settings leading them to believe that the role, input and contribution of family carers is an important and neglected area. To explore this further they have created a questionnaire based on what family carers have told them.

Would you like to be part of creating a new piece of graffiti art for Tinsley Canal? The Carers Project in partnership with Sheffield River and Canal Trust are offering free graffiti art sessions in March and April for unpaid carers and their cared for adult with a mild/moderate learning disability and or autism.

With effect from Monday 2nd December, personal wheelchair budgets are being introduced as part of a range of measures to improve current wheelchair service provision, to ensure people have better experiences of care and to give people greater choice over the wheelchair provided. People who need Section 117 after care support now have the right to a personal health budget, providing them with greater choice and control when managing their own health and care.

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway has set up a new carers’ outreach group for the Birley area of Sheffield. It is part of their Carers Outreach Project and will be meeting every first Tuesday of the month.

STOMP stands for stopping over medication of people with a learning disability, autism or both with psychotropic medicines. It is a national project involving many different organisations which are helping to stop the over use of these medicines. STOMP is about helping people to stay well and have a good quality of life.

People with a learning disability are significantly less likely to be in paid employment than other people. A report by the Institute for Policy Research (IPPR) North, the University of Sheffield and Manchester Metropolitan University, found that many children and young people with a learning disability are not getting the support they need to get the education, training, and preparation for adulthood that they are entitled to. An Action Plan will follow and you can still get in touch to share your experiences of working, or trying to find work.
