    Face Coverings  : Why and How to Wear Them Safely

    From 8 August face coverings need to be worn in additional indoor settings, unless you are exempt from wearing a face covering. We’re reminding you that Greg Fell, Director of Public Health in Sheffield, in his July video ,explained the importance of wearing face coverings correctly with continued social distancing and hygiene. He emphasised that the most important ways to control the pandemic are to stay at home if you have symptoms, keep your distance where possible, wash your hands frequently and wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces if you are able to do so.

    Shielders Returning to Work Could Face Unacceptable Risk

    Government support for shielding came to an end on 1 August. Following new guidance clinically extremely vulnerable people will no longer receive food boxes and medicine deliveries and can return to work as long as the workplace is Covid-secure. The changes have raised concerns among Disabled People’s Organisations that a one size fits all approach to stopping shielding could leave some people with no option but to return to unsafe public transport and work places, which put them at an unacceptably high risk of catching the virus”.

    Council Announce Three New Coronavirus Testing Centres

    The first of three local Coronavirus testing units opened on 29 July and is based at Alderson Road Car Park in Sharrow. The unit will be operating from 8am-8pm for a three month period, allowing people with symptoms to get tested for free.Tests can be arranged by calling 119, can be booked or you can walk-in without an appointment.

    COVID-19 Independent Living Survey

    Shaping Our Lives has launched a new survey asking d/Deaf and Disabled people what impact the COVID-19 lockdown has had on their independent living. There are 10 sections in the survey and many of the questions have a choice of answers. You are able to skip any question you wish and all answers will be kept anonymous. The findings will be used to tell people in national and local government the support d/Deaf and disabled people need to get back to living independently, feeling safe and confident.

    Coronavirus and SEND Survey Report

    The Special Needs Jungle decided to carry out a Coronavirus and SEND survey after hearing parental accounts of risk assessments being utilised by schools during lockdown, to prevent children with SEND returning to school. They wanted to determine how widespread this was, as well as other experiences of families mid-pandemic. Their report claims that many families received little or nothing from their child’s school and that 75% of schools ignored Government risk assessment guidance during the lockdown, with parents and young people often left out of the risk assessment process.

    Sheffield CCG has created a video of GP practice staff from across Sheffield reminding the public that they’re still open and #StillHereForYou. The video shows Sheffield GPs urging members of the public to visit their GP especially if they experience particular symptoms so that they can be treated quickly.

    Disabled People Facing Discrimination over Face Coverings

    Disability Rights UK has written to the Minister for Disabled People, Justin Tomlinson MP, raising concerns that disabled people are not being listened to when it comes to exemptions from wearing face masks. “We would ask that government urgently recognises the need for balanced messaging, including that some disabled people cannot wear face coverings and that this should be respected.”

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
