Lockdown has seen a huge increase in incidents of domestic abuse, with leading charity Refuge reporting a 700% increase in calls to their helpline in a single day. Women’s Aid has produced a range of Coronavirus/COVID-19 Safety and Support Resources for survivors, friends, family, neighbours and community members including in British sign language and other languages.

A website designed to help support the most vulnerable in our society in this time of crisis is providing links to mutual aid organisations and advice on how to help out with them and to set up your own. The Covid-19 Mutual Aid UK site provides links to more than 50 mutual aid groups in the South Yorkshire area .

People with a learning disability and autism have helped co-produce a hard-hitting video to get their ‘Work with us, not for us’ message across. It is about them being the experts on their own lives, and what good support looks like. The video, Making Plans For Nigel, named after and featuring a 1979 hit single by wacky powerpop band XTC, aims to show the way that some disabled people are often labelled against their will, patronised and not listened to.

Disability organisation Scope has teamed up with Virgin Media in a bid to get a million people into work by 2020. Their Support to Work scheme offers online support to disabled jobseekers via telephone, Skype and text. Employment advisers offer advice on employability skills, writing a CV and interview techniques. Your personal adviser will create a 12-week action plan hopefully designed to help you succeed in the jobs market.
