    Woman Wins Battle Over BSL At Covid Briefings

    A deaf woman from Yorkshire won a claim against the government after a judge found a lack of sign language at two Covid briefings “served to disempower, to frustrate and to marginalise”.Ms Rowley launched the court action against Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove in relation to the “data briefings” on 21 September and 12 October 2020.

    The DPO Forum Engand , made up of Disabled Peoples Organisations, including Disability Sheffield, has issued a press release expressing outrage at the Government’s decision to go ahead with the launch of a national disability strategy saying that is not a strategy, does not address key problems, does not reflect the issues and priorities of Disabled people and was not developed with Disabled people organisations.

    SC4A are recruiting to a new role of Zoom host and promoter.During Covid SC4A set up 4 inclusive online classes – Movement 4 All, Yoga 4 All, Boxing 4 All and Dance 4 All. The classes are led by professional instructors but we need someone to host the classes and do some additional online promotion work. You will need to be comfortable using zoom and social media and confident in your communication skills.We are looking for someone to work 7 hrs per week.The closing date is Monday 23 August.

    Sheffield Voices Express Anger Over Abuse Scandal

    Learning disabilities self-advocacy group Sheffield Voices has called for change and expressed anger in a video after an autism and learning disability unit was closed to new admissions . A CQC report identified that The Firshill Rise unit was not safe or effective and people experienced harm because of a lack of protection, abusive incidents, restraint and seclusion.

    SCR Urged to Consider Accessibility Issues in its Bus Services Improvement Plan

    On the 4th of June 2021 Sheffield Transport 4 All (ST4A) wrote to the Sheffield City Region (SCR) Mayor Dan Jarvis asking for his thoughts on boosting accessibility as part of the Bus Services Improvement Plan (BSIP). The plan is an essential component of securing funds from government to keep bus services running as passenger numbers recover over the coming years. Disappointingly ST4A still have not received a reply from the mayor that responds to the accessibility points raised and has brought this to the attention of Disability Sheffield.
