    International Day of People with Disabilities

    Friday 3 December is the International Day of People with Disabilities. The 2021 theme ‘Fighting for rights in the post-COVID era’ recognises that people who live with disabilities are among the most affected populations amid the COVID pandemic. Where marginalisation, discrimination, vulnerability and exploitation are every day factors for many people, the increased risk of poor outcomes have been magnified with the reduced access to routine health care and rehabilitation services, more pronounced social isolation, poorly tailored public health messaging, inadequately constructed mental health services, and a lack of emergency preparedness for people with special needs.

    Join our new Healthy Living Steering Group

    We are launching a new co-production project that’s aiming to make healthy living and physical activity opportunities more accessible for adults with a learning disability, autism or severe mental illness. We’re currently looking for people with lived experience to join our steering group – if you are an adult with autism, severe mental illness or a learning disability, or you support someone with one of these conditions, we’d love to hear from you!

    Race, Disability and Self Directed Support in Sheffield

    This online workshop on Wednesday 8th December 2021 from 11am to 1pm will explore experiences of social care and self directed support for disabled people from black, asian and minority ethnic communities in Sheffield. It will include highlights from Think Local Act Personal’s recent report about the value of community groups in achieving personalised care.Anyone with an interest in these issues is welcome to take part.

    UN CRDP Consultation Events

    The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Disabled People is a major global catalyst for the progression of disabled people’s rights.Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations play a key role in the examination process, submitting “shadow” reports to the UN Committee responsible for the CRDP. Participants in our workshops in November will help shape the shadow report as DDPOs prepare for the next examination of the UK under the CRDP.

Sheffield Voices has been nominated for their outstanding work on raising awareness and challenging issues relating to bad practice and abuse of patients in inpatients units both in Sheffield and beyond.We hope Sheffield Voices will win!

  • Weight For It...

    Weight For It...

    Our learning disability group, Sheffield Voices has secured funding from Zest to run a 10-month weight management course for a ‘lighter life’ for anyone with a learning disability or autism who has a BMI over 25. The group is meeting every Tuesday at Hillsborough Arena from 1-3pm to learn about healthy eating, learn from each other and have some fun doing dance, playing boccia, curling and some general exercise. Places are still available so do get in touch if you’d like to know more.

    Our Halo Code Commitment

    We are pleased to announce that Disability Sheffield has adopted the Halo Code to prevent race-based hair discrimination in our workplace. Race-based hair discrimination is where Black people are told their hair textures and hairstyles are inappropriate, unattractive, and unprofessional due to racist attitudes. We want to to ensure no members of our team, both employees and volunteers, are ever made to feel ashamed or excluded due to their hair.

    Is the Accessible Information Standard Working ?

    At Disability Sheffield in our latest video we’re asking people living in Sheffield How Accessible is Your GP’s Surgery? It’s very timely to release our video just as a coalition of charities, SignHealth , Sense, RAD, RNIB, LDEngland, Visionary, RNID and HealthWatch have come together to review how the Accessible Information Standard has impacted patient experiences, five years on from its implementation in 2016.
