Free Legal Advice from Sheffield's Universities

Free Legal Advice from Sheffield's Universities

If you need legal advice or help but are unable to afford it, you may like to be aware that both Sheffield’s universities have departments that can offer support for free with various legal issues.

Sheffield Hallam University has SHU Law which says: “Our legal services are tailored to meet the needs of those who either cannot afford to pay a solicitor to fight for their rights or who want cost effective legal services to help them to achieve their goals.”

Meanwhile Sheffield University Pro Bono work offers “a range of student-led legal advice clinics in the School of Law that benefit the community, whilst providing valuable real-world experience for students.”

These are known as ‘pro bono’ services after a Latin term meaning “for the good of the public”. In the legal profession, it refers to the provision of legal services free of charge.

After the launch of their first pro bono scheme in 2008, they have expanded to 10 schemes with over 200 places for student volunteers. These include Freelaw, a student-led service offering free legal advice to the public. Working in groups students cover most areas of law, conducting interviews and undertaking the required research. The research is always overseen by a qualified solicitor to ensure the advice received is accurate and relevant. To get an appointment you can email freelaw@sheffield.ac.uk

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
