#BigPowerOff Protests Becoming Bigger

#BigPowerOff Protests Becoming Bigger

A protest against rising energy prices spearheaded by a Sheffield-based group has now taken off nationally, with another #BigPowerOff event due to take place this weekend.

The original video, featuring Jen Jones from DPAC Sheffield, the local branch of Disabled People Against Cuts, called for people to turn their power supplies off, or down as far as possible, on the morning of April 1st, to show that the public were not prepared to continue being taken for fools.

The idea proved to be so popular that a similar event – for ten minutes this time and promoted across Britain – was set up on Saturday April 10th and ended up trending on Twitter and featuring in the national press and media.

The next in what is likely to be a continuing series of protests takes place this Saturday April 16th at 7pm. You can see details here.

Sheffield City Council has launched a guide to getting financial help and advice during the current cost of living crisis. This includes details on what to do if you’re struggling to pay your energy bills. with Money saving Expert.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.
