Carers

Free PPE
The government has recommended that carers who do not live in the same house as the person they care for should use PPE, which is available free for carers in these situations.

Anyone providing unpaid care and support to an adult with a disability or long term impairment, including a learning disability or autism, living in a different household, can now access free personal protective equipment (PPE). This will be available until the end of March 2022.

To arrange to collect your free PPE from one of the seven main family centres in the city contact Sheffield City Council’s family centre on 0114 273 5665 . The packs contain: face masks, shields, aprons and gloves.

This provision is in line with the following updated government guidance which includes information on washing hands, use of PPE, and respiratory hygiene.

NHS Identification Card for Unpaid Carers
As part of their Covid-19 work to support unpaid carers, NHS England prepared a carers’ identification letter and guidance. It has been developed to support unpaid carers, including young carers, who may need to provide care to people in their own home, or across multiple homes. Its purpose is to provide an explanation of why someone may need to be out more frequently or visit different homes during lockdown restrictions.

The letter confirms that a named carer is supporting a person receiving health and care services, who relies on their help to keep them safe and well. It also lists the task carers may need to perform and that that they need to go inside the home of the person they care for.

The letter has not been made available for the public to download, but can be issued to named carers by a health/care provider or carers’ support organisation, including from Disability Sheffield. However the Government’s Department Of Health And Social Care has issued guidance for unpaid carers.

Sheffield Carers Centre’s new guide aims to help carers, and those they care for maintain social connections whilst also following physical distancing guidelines. The 12-page guide highlights the importance of having social interaction and lists some of the most popular ways people are now keeping in touch. It also provides some inspirational real life examples of how people have made new friends. On a practical level, the guide includes links to some examples of the numerous local and national groups that can help people stay socially connected.

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
