The Dutch city of Breda has won a prestigious award for its efforts to improve accessibility for disabled people.The Access City Award, which in 2017 was won by Chester in England, is awarded by the European Commmission at the European Day Of Persons With Disabilities. Read how Breda has attempted to improve access and provides a lesson and a model for Sheffield and other British cities to aspire to.

Disability Sheffield and the Disability Hub together with the Access Liaison Group have put together a response to the Transport Committee Pavement Parking Inquiry highlighting pavement parking as a seriously dangerous issue for wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments, blind people and people with sensory impairments or any pavement user forced to leave the pavement and use the public highway, which poses obvious risks.

Check out “What’s On” during Disabled Access Day which takes place on Saturday 16th March . The event – the fourth – is designed to celebrate those places which have made the effort to ensure that everyone can visit them and use the facilities.Disabled Access Day has quadrupled in size since the first one and has major attractions such as Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral signed up to it as well as many museums, galleries, other attractions and businesses.

The extent to which government cuts have deprived disabled people of legal aid in disputes over their benefit payments is revealed in new official figures that show a 99% decline since 2011. As a result disabled people are now in “a weaker position to challenge inaccuracy and poor decision-making within government welfare systems.”

Although the final Supreme Court ruling fell short of making it a legal requirement for bus companies to compel non-wheelchair passengers to move from the space, the Government has now said it aims to implement new measures including clearer signs saying wheelchair users have priority and powers for drivers to eject passengers who refuse to move.
