About Us — Our Commitment
We are committed to the ‘social approach’ to disability.
We are committed to the ‘social approach’ to disability, rather than the ‘medical approach’. People with impairments are disabled by the barriers they face in every day life – such as inaccessible communication formats, people’s attitudes or inaccessible buildings – not by the way minds and bodies work. This approach has now been adopted as good practice by central government, Sheffield City Council and NHS Sheffield as well as internationally.
Our aims are to work in partnership with disabled people and the wider community to:
· Promote inclusive living· Campaign for equality and complete control· Co-produce innovative solutions· Campaign for change· Promote good practice across Sheffield

Management & Governance
Disability Sheffield CIL has a management committee of Trustees who all have personal experience of disability and the barriers that disabled people face in society. Our Trustees are committed to the concept of a social model of disability and a rights-based approach to services and public policy. They are accountable to both Companies House and the Charity Commission and ensure that Disability Sheffield CIL has systems in place to protect the interests of the organisation and its members.
Partners, Funders and Supporters
We benefit from a strong relationship with Healthwatch Sheffield and other organisations who share our aims of increasing the voice of disabled people and other people in health and care. Our Partnerships ensure a joined up approach to gathering experience, data and representing people’s views.
