Help Shape the Future of Personal Assistant (PA) Support in Sheffield

In health and social care, a Personal Assistant (PA) supports someone with care and support needs. Unlike agency care workers, PAs are employed directly by the person they support, or by someone acting on their behalf. This direct employment relationship is what makes the PA role unique.

Sheffield City Council is evaluating the work it’s doing to support PAs and PA employers. We want to better understand what helps people become PAs, what helps them stay in the role, and how we can improve support for both PAs and PA employers. The project will run from August 2026 – January 2028 in partnership with the University of Sheffield.

How can people get involved?

Sheffield City Council are really interested to hear from PAs, PA employers and anyone else who has experience or ideas in this area.

There will be several opportunities to take part, including:

  • Events where you can share your thoughts
  • Interviews about your experiences
  • A co-production group of people with lived experience, helping to shape the project and its recommendations

The time of people with lived experience and expertise (PAs and PA employers) is particularly valued – Sheffield City Council can discuss reimbursement for this (including expenses) depending on how people want to take part.
