New Survey Into Impact of Austerity

A new survey about the impact of austerity on disabled people hopes to publish its results before the General Election takes place on December 12th and will be used as the basis for a look into the future of disability rights in Britain and a call for improvements. The Public Interest Research Centre and Disabled People Against Cuts are hoping for a quick response to the survey.

The Ripple Effect

Sheffield Mind’s ‘The Ripple Effect’ is a bereavement ‘navigation service’ designed to enable people to access emotional and practical support after the loss of a loved one. It provides up to 3 months of one-to-one support and additional group activities in Greenhill, Beauchief and surrounding areas for people experiencing bereavement. The ‘ripple effect’ comes when the newly empowered individual shares their skills and confidence with others in the community.

Report Condemns Detention of Young People In Mental Health Facilities

The British Parliament’s Joint Committee On Human Rights findings condemn the “horrific reality” of conditions and treatment under which many young people with learning disabilities and autism are detained in mental health hospitals, “inflicting terrible suffering on those detained and causing anguish to their distraught families”.

Video Vote Gives Disabled People A Sporting Chance

Who says disabled people aren’t competitive? Well, you have the chance to prove that they are – and can also play to win – by voting for a fundraising video in a prestigious contest. Activity Alliance aims to make active lives possible by enabling organisations to support disabled individuals to be and stay active. Their video – actually entitled Who Says Disabled People Aren’t Competitive? – has been entered for this year’s Charity Film Awards.

How Access Officers in Sheffield Help Secure Independence for Disabled People

Disability Sheffield as a member of the Access Liaison Group are supporting a petition that seeks to safeguard the access officer positions within Sheffield City Council. If Sheffield wants to be leaders in the field of inclusivity for disabled people then it has to lead by example and retain its Access Officers in order to ensure the involvement of disabled people around consultation and the built environment. Putting PIP Assessments On The Record

Campaigners calling for compulsory recording of Personal Independence Payments assessments have taken matters into their own hands – by loaning out equipment to disabled people who want to get theirs taped. DPAC Sheffield, the local branch of national organisation Disabled People Against Cuts organised a crowdfunding appeal to purchase equipment and raised enough to buy two sets, although they are now hoping to buy more.The service is backed by and was launched at Disability Sheffield’s office at The Circle in Sheffield city centre. The first disabled person to use the equipment was a Disability Sheffield volunteer.

Visiting Hours at Sheffield Hospitals

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals ( STH ) is evaluating their visiting hours and running a survey to collect the views of inpatients and visitors. STH moved from set visiting hours to flexible visiting between 8am to 8pm last year, and want to find out how this has affected patients and their visitors.
