Physical Fitness Can Help Mental Health

Physical Fitness Can Help Mental Health

People living with a severe mental illness (SMI) are being urged to improve their physical fitness to help their mental health.

A new initiative developed and hosted by Sheffield Flourish on the Sheffield Mental Health Guide reminds people that if you are living with SMI you are entitled to a free physical health check every year and that a healthier body can often lead to a healthier mind.

One page is aimed at people living with SMI and their carers/family, which has been co-designed with experts by experience: You can see it here.

Another page is aimed at health and care staff, and has been codesigned with local health and care professionals.

Both pages include a focus on annual physical health checks, but also have lots of other physical health information and resources (including about covid and flu vaccinations), particularly aimed at improving the physical health of people living with SMI.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.
