    Ralph and Katie's Story Continues

    In a Spin-off series following the first year of marriage for the characters from ‘The A Word’ young couple Ralph and Katie face the domestic challenges faced by all newlyweds, but with the added fact that they have Down’s Syndrome. The series has been written by a team of disabled writers. Disability campaigners have welcomed the announcement of the new programme, calling it an “excellent example of disabled representation on and off screen”.

    Move More Big Health Event

    Speakup Rotherham are holding their annual Keeping Healthy event in Sheffield with partners at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield on 12th September from 10am to 2.30pm.They have 100 spaces for adults with learning disabilities and autistic people from across Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley, to try sporting activities and attend workshops.     From 14th until the end of June the free #EqualTreatment seminars and follow up workshops aim to share the lived experiences of health and social care services and support of B.A.M.E families with children and adults with learning disabilities. They will consider how to challenge and address racism and inequalities locally and regionally as service providers, communities and families and call for action, accountability and a commitment for change.

    Under The Stars and On Stage

    Members of performing arts organisation Under The Stars will be acting up at the end of this month and the start of next – with two separate shows at the Crucible Theatre.The Sheffield based charity uses the performing arts to enhance the lives of people with learning disabilities and/or autism. ‘Freedonia’ takes place on Tuesday May 31 and ‘The Many Journeys of Maria Rossini’ the following evening, both in the Studio Theatre starting at 7pm.

    What's your Experience of Accessing Heathcare?

    We think everyone with a learning disability or autism should get good healthcare. Disability Sheffield is hosting a series of events during the week of 16th-20th May to find out what people’s experiences are of accessing healthcare in Sheffield. if you have a learning disability , autism or you are a carer, do join us. We’ll also send out a survey and offer a phoneline for two weeks so you can call and leave messages for us to tell us what you think.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)
