Campaigning organisation Disabled People Against Cuts is launching an investigation into why some doctors are refusing to help their patients by writing letters to support their disability benefits claims. If your doctor has refused to write a letter stating that you need a home visit for a benefit assessment or has refused to issue you with a Fit Note, DPAC would like to hear from you.

Members of DPAC Sheffield the local branch of campaigning organisation “Disabled People Against Cuts” are holding a protest rally at Sheffield railway station on the morning of Friday May 31st against a £250,000 advertising campaign for the controversial Universal Credit scheme in the free Metro newspaper.

Campaigning organisation Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) is looking for examples of people being blocked from social media site Facebook because of their disability, following a row over pictures of a wheelchair-using model being banned and a telephone conversation in which an employee suggested that pictures of disabled people are ‘disturbing’.

Trailblazers has been launched following the Government’s body confidence report, which said: “Poor body image is not just a problem for individuals. It is an equalities issue, limiting the opportunities and rewards on offer to some sections of society.”

Model Katie Price’s campaign to make online abuse towards disabled people a criminal offence has won the backing of MPs after more than 220,000 people signed her petition. Following an inquiry the Chair of the House of Commons Petitions Committee said “The law on online abuse is not fit for purpose and it is truly shameful that disabled people have been forced off social media while their abusers face no consequences.”

Sheffield Carers Centre is holding a free workshop on Thursday February 7th, from 10.30am to 2.30pm to make carers more aware of their legal rights and enable them to plan campaigns. The workshop will cover what people are entitled to under the Care Act 2014, how to plan a campaign and influence local decision makers and how to use traditional and social medias to bring about the change you want to see.

Sheffield Trades Union Council has commissioned researchers from Middlesex,Staffordshire Universities and Sheffield Hallam University to undertake research to support the Sheffield Needs A Pay Rise campaign. The research will focus on and seek to capture the experiences of people, including disabled people, who are or have been in low paid and insecure employment (zero hours contracts, temporary and part time work) plus any impact on claiming benefits, including Universal Credit. A focus group for disabled people is planned for w/c 16 April if you would like to take part.
