Driven by Disabled People, Dedicated to Removing Barriers.
Disability Sheffield is a Centre for Independent Living (CIL). This means that we are run by disabled people for disabled people. At Disability Sheffield, disabled people make decisions, work as staff members, and plan the work and direction of our organisation. The purpose of a Centre for Independent Living is to help disabled people make decisions about their lives and support them to live in the community.
We are committed to the ‘social approach’ to disability, rather than the ‘medical approach’. People with impairments are disabled by the barriers they face in everyday life – such as inaccessible communication formats, people’s attitudes or inaccessible buildings – not by the way minds and bodies work.
Our History
Disability Sheffield has been providing support to disabled people in Sheffield for over 20 years. We have provided a wide range of services, groups and projects based on the needs of the community. We continue to put the needs of disabled people at the forefront of the work we do, and specifically target services and projects based on the feedback we receive from you.
How We Work
We rely on your participation – Disability Sheffield’s main purpose is to make Sheffield better for everyone with a disability. Our Social Advocacy work aims to improve society and the individual well-being of disabled people by influencing public policy, raising awareness, and empowering people to exercise their rights. We believe that the change we’re working towards should be led by you. We need you to tell us what matters to you and we will support you to realise the changes you want to see. We need you to get involved!
Our Team
As a registered charity, Disability Sheffield has a management committee of Trustees who have personal experience of disability and the barriers that disabled people face in society. Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers work hard to make sure that the services we offer work well and properly support the community of disabled people in Sheffield.
