Disability Hub Is Basic Income the alternative to Government welfare reforms?

Tuesday 20th November

UN International Day of Disabled People 2018

The Disability Hub in association with UBI Lab Sheffield, Disability Sheffield and the Centre for Welfare Reform

Is Basic Income the alternative to Government welfare reforms?

For more than 8 years disabled people in the UK have been hit by cuts in vital services, cuts in income and changes to the benefit system which are cruel and harmful. The introduction of Universal Credit is just the latest stage in this process, and finally campaigners are having some success in resisting these cuts.

There is at least one alternative to these ideas: Basic Income Plus

The idea of basic income is supported by John McDonnell, the Green Party and by many other progressive thinkers and campaigners, including Jim Elder-Woodward, a long-time campaigner for independent living. Sheffield has its own group working on basic income – UBI Lab Sheffield – and it is supported by the Sheffield-based think-tank – the Centre for Welfare Reform.

Come and join Disability Sheffield, UBI Lab Sheffield and Dr Simon Duffy of the Centre for Welfare Reform on 3rd December – the International Day of Disabled People – to find out more.

Questions we’ll explore include:

  • What is basic income?
Why should disabled people get more than the basic income?
What method should we use to decide how much people get?
Should Disability Sheffield support UBI Lab Sheffield’s pilot proposals?
If we like basic income what can we do to help it advance?

Very good presentation, brave of the speakers to tell their stories and had a very high impact - feedback from Mate/Hate Crime presentation and video session at Safeguarding Working Together Conference

Disability Sheffield is a forward-thinking, energetic organisation doing a lot of positive work in Sheffield. I have no doubt they will continue to do so for a long time to come.

When I moved to Sheffield nearly five years ago it was my "go to" organisation. I expect it to stay that way. All the staff and volunteers seem to pull out little gems of effort that disabled people like me couldn't do without. Professionally and personally - I love em :)

A fantastic presentation thought provoking and good questions from the floor around promoting this film/message to the general public not just professionals.
