    Join Online Consultation : 8 Ideas to Improve The Benefits System

    Everyone knows current welfare benefits are failing, but what would be a better approach? The Commission on Social Security ,set up by welfare system users to suggest ways in which it can be improved, has issued an invitation to an online event to discuss their proposals on Wednesday August 12 from 7 to 8.30pm. All the Commissioners are Experts by Experience. This means they each have lived experience of the benefits system and come from a range of claimant/user-led groups and Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations.

    Emergency Changes To Disability Benefits 'Needed'

    The Disability Benefits Consortium has written an open letter to Therese Coffey, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, to call for emergency changes to the benefits system to ensure disabled people are protected from further physical and financial harm during the Covid-19 crisis. The Consortium has separately recommended that the DWP should engage more with disabled people in formulating policies and processes which affect them.

    Petition - Review PIP Assessment

    This petition asks for a review of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessment process claiming that evidence shows that people with epilepsy are disproportionately discriminated against during the assessment process. Of those people who have epilepsy and previously received Disability Living Allowance, 54% were denied PIP, this is the second highest rejection rate out of all health conditions and double the national average.

    Campaigning organisation Disabled People Against Cuts is launching an investigation into why some doctors are refusing to help their patients by writing letters to support their disability benefits claims. If your doctor has refused to write a letter stating that you need a home visit for a benefit assessment or has refused to issue you with a Fit Note, DPAC would like to hear from you.

  • Massive Rise In Disability Assessment Complaints

    There has been an increase by more than 6,000% in complaints over assessments for disability benefits, shock new Government figures reveal, with a woman from Sheffield among those who have been forced to take action after cuts. Jennifer Jones had her benefits downgraded despite having ME, fibromyalgia and bipolar disorder.A week before a tribunal was to take place Jennifer was contacted by a DWP case manager who offered to restore her payment to their original levels.

  • Petition Against Merger Of Disability Assessments

    A disability rights campaigner has launched a petition in a bid to stop the Government merging assessments for Personal Independence Payments and Employment And Support Allowance.
    The planned changes – due to start in 2021 – were announced recently in a speech by Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd, but London-based activist and blogger Lisa Egan is urging people to fight this. The petition closes on Sept 19

  • PIP Re-Assessments for Over 65s to Cease

    From this Spring over 65s who receive Personal Independence Payments will no longer have to undergo reviews to continue receiving the benefit. The change, which was announced by Amber Rudd, the Work and Pensions Secretary in a recent welfare benefit reform speech, is set to affect 270,000 people.
